Who We Are
SOMOS Mayfair builds community power in East San José through leadership development and by organizing around resident-led solutions.
Our mission is to support children, organize families, and connect neighbors to uplift the dreams, power, and leadership of community and address systemic inequities. Our vision is a thriving Mayfair.
What We Do
We are working toward a vision where everyone is able to build their leadership capacity to ensure families have access to everything, including resources and opportunities to strengthen our community (Todo Para Todos). Believing all individuals have the agency, potential, and voice to shift power from institutions back into the hands of the community, we uplift the very people most affected by disparities to take action, to create meaningful connections with their peers, and to make an impact in Mayfair that supports their families’ immediate needs and future prosperity.
We build community power through…
Community Organizing
Leadership Development
Early Education
Economic Opportunity

Collaborating with partners to win the development of Quetzal Gardens- a new project making affordable apartments available to residents
Securing $1.2M for translation services within our public schools
Championing a local preference policy to protect residents from displacement

Where We Work
Mayfair is a vibrant and historical neighborhood that has a huge legacy of social services, community organizing, and social justice movements. Mayfair was home to the renowned labor leader Cesar Chavez and a birthplace for the Mexican-American civil rights movement. Today, the Mayfair neighborhood is a working class, cultural hub drawing first- and second-generation immigrants from Latin American and Asian countries. Mayfair is both a community of transitions and new beginnings, where immigrants come and families settle to pursue their dreams.
“Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed. You cannot un-educate the person that has learned how to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore.”
